A. Theologis provides an update of the search for ethylene receptors in plants. Two papers in this issue of Science (Shaller and Bleecker,
p. 1809, and Wilkinson et al.,
p. 1807) provide evidence that the putative ethylene receptor ETR1 can actually bind ethylene and that ethylene sensors are encoded by multigene families with members that are differentially expressed during plant growth and development.
