The deregulation fever gripping Washington has spread to the radioisotopes used in medicine and biomedical research. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has monitored these isotopes for the past 40 years as part of its oversight of the nuclear reactors where they are produced, but a panel of experts convened by the Institute of Medicine has now recommended that it turn over its authority to the states. The panel deemed many of the NRC's regulations burdensome and unnecessary.
