Researchers looking to accomplish the ultimate goal of the Human Genome Project--the complete sequencing of all 3 billion bases in the genome--now have a major new tool to help them. In an article also appearing in this issue
(p. 1945), Eric Lander's team at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research describes a detailed new physical map of the human genome. Not only is its coverage more complete than that of previous maps, but the landmarks used, which are called sequence-tagged sites, make it more versatile and easier to use. While not yet as detailed as sequencers want, it opens the door to genomewide sequencing.
