In a series of recent papers, two separate groups of researchers, one French and the other a U.S.-Anglo-French collaboration, have shown that there is more than meets the eye in the decades-old mathematical description of diffusion. The diffusion equation, they contend, can do more than simply provide concentrations at specific points and times: With a newly identified exponent, it also produces information about how the process progressed.
