The Hedgehog protein is a key signaling molecule in embryogenesis, sending a message that allows embryonic hands to tell thumb from little finger, for example. But researchers have long sought the molecular receiver for Hedgehog's message and gotten conflicting results. New studies offer a reason why: Two proteins, Patched and Smoothened, appear to work together to receive and relay the signal.
