Genetics researchers are scouring odd corners of the world for families whose DNA is likely to carry interesting genes. They won't be freely sharing what they find, however, because their backing comes from large pharmaceutical companies that are banking on discovering and patenting a gene for a common ailment, and perhaps parlaying it into a therapy.
