SIGNAL TRANSDUCTION:
Enhanced: A New Player in Cell Death

Timothy Hoey

Some small signaling molecules, the cytokines, convey their information to the nucleus of cells via proteins called STATs, using the ability of the STATs to phosphorylate and dimerize. In his Perspective, Hoey discusses a new way STATs can send their signals through the cell--through their COOH-terminal tails--that does not require phosphorylation or dimerization. These new results are reported in this issue by Kumar et al.
