GENOME RESEARCH:
Japan Centers In on Genome Work

TOKYO--From sequencing to large-scale nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, genomic research wins a big boost in Japan's new budget after years of lobbying for increased support by genome scientists. Despite frantic efforts to tighten its belt, the government has proposed a doubling of spending on genome-related research in 1998. The increases are spread across agencies and fields, and include one program that researchers see as breaking new ground in genome-related work. But some worry that the priorities are skewed.
