CELL BIOLOGY:
The Ins and Outs of Protein Translocation

Howard Riezman

Cells are tiny manufacturing plants for proteins. To ensure the quality of these products, the cell picks out misfolded and misassembled proteins and destroys them. In his Perspective, Riezman describes recent progress in understanding this quality control process and explains a report presented in this issue by Biederer et al., which sheds light on how these defective proteins are labeled for destruction by the cell.
