One method of trace analysis, electrokinetic chromatography, has several potential advantages, including high efficiency and simplicity, small sample requirements, wide applicability to many compounds, and potential for miniaturization (labs on chips). However, this form of capilliary electrophoresis has suffered from poor detection limits. Quirino and Terabe 465 now show how modifications (the use of a neutral analyte zone during sample injection) can boost detection limits by a factor of 5000 and allow analysis at the parts per billion level.
