FRANCE:
Researchers Rail Against CNRS Reforms

PARIS--Last week, some French scientists were threatening protests over proposed reforms of the CNRS, a public agency employing 11,600 full-time researchers that is the bedrock of French science. On 10 October, an early draft of the reforms was presented to CNRS's executive board, outlining a number of proposed changes, most of which were designed to create closer ties between the CNRS and university labs. The document was quickly leaked to researchers' unions, who raised the alarm about what they saw as a threat to the independence of CNRS labs.
