ITALIAN RESEARCH:
Reforms at Final Stage Under New Minister

TRIESTE--As Luigi Berlinguer, Italy's research minister for the past 2 years, was replaced last week by history professor Ortensio Zecchino, a parliamentary committee began its final vetting of Berlinguer's grand reform of Italian science. In the proposed new model, the national research council (CNR), a body with 320 research institutes and centers, would lose its role as funding agency and instead focus on its own research efforts at CNR labs or through collaborations with academia; lab numbers could be cut by as much as two-thirds. The reforms have angered CNR researchers and lab directors because they would diminish CNR's role and reduce its autonomy, but major changes are not expected at this late stage.
