By confining planes of laser-cooled 9Be+ ions, Mitchell et al. 1290 have observed directly the structure of these quasi-two-dimensional crystals. As the areal density of the confined ions was altered, the plane of ions underwent structural phase transitions associated with different energetically favorable structures. For the ion system studied, five different crystalline phases were observed, in good agreement with the theoretical predictions of the one-component plasma model.
