ASTROPHYSICS:
Black Hole Horizons

A review by Richard A. Matzner

Black Holes and Relativistic Stars
Robert M. Wald, Ed.
University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 1998. 290 pp. $50, £39.95. ISBN 0-226-87034-0.

Based on a symposium honoring Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, this volume provides a comprehensive overview of the current theory of black holes and relativistic stars. Black holes are considered as astrophysical objects that can be understood within the framework of classical general relativity and as fundamental objects in quantum gravitational physics (with a focus on thermodynamic properties and the possibility of information loss during black hole formation and evaporation).
