Starbirth, Gamma Blast Hint at Active Early Universe

Astronomers have thought that star birth subsides at great distances. Now, however, they have seen signs of frenzied star birth as far as telescopes can probe. They have also spotted a tremendous flash of gamma rays that may have originated at even greater distances. These hints that the early universe was more active than anyone suspected contradict the evidence of the Hubble Deep Field, a 10-day space telescope exposure that NASA unveiled 3 years ago.
