FRENCH RESEARCH:
CNRS Researchers Take Up the Fight Against Allègre's Reforms

PARIS--On 14 December, the national committee of the CNRS, France's giant basic research agency, flocked to Paris to debate proposed reforms of the agency. This body of more than 800 researchers, which has only met in full session four times since 1945, mobilized to oppose stronger links to France's university system, a plan put forward by France's research minister, geochemist Claude Allègre. Like many events in French history, the daylong meeting had its share of fireworks.
