IMMUNOLOGY:
Interleukin-13's Key Role in Asthma Shown

Researchers probing the molecular basis of asthma--which involves a dramatic and dangerous overreaction by the immune sytem--had focused on a messenger molecule called interleukin-4. But two independent teams report in this issue (see pages 2258 and 2261) that a sibling molecule, called interleukin-13, may be an even more potent stimulus of this runaway immune reaction. The results come from mouse studies, but if they hold up in humans, they suggest two promising targets for antiasthma therapies.
