Fusion Gains, Basic Science Takes a Hit

Despite continuing criticism of security at its weapons labs and lax worker safety controls, the Department of Energy has won from Congress a 4.3% increase in its science budget for the fiscal year that began last week. Although the 2000 budget will mean delays for several projects, including the $1.2 billion Spallation Neutron Source, and cuts in others, such as materials science, some programs come out ahead. Even more important, say supporters, is that the integrity of the science program remains intact.
