Most science-oriented philanthropies cultivate an above-the-fray, aristocratic image. Not so the James S. McDonnell Foundation, a St. Louis-based philanthropy that last year had assets of $480 million. McDonnell, which largely supports neurosciences and has made a name for itself by fostering the subdiscipline of cognitive neuroscience, runs like an academic department, relies heavily on outside peer reviewers, and is not afraid to collaborate with other foundations.
