NOBEL PRIZES:
A Winning Flash Dance
Robert F. Service
Egyptian-born physical chemist Ahmed Zewail has pioneered the use of ultrashort laser pulses to witness the dance of atoms as they knit and break chemical bonds, earning him the 1999 Nobel Prize in chemistry. Before Zewail's work, few chemists dreamed of ever being able to witness chemical reactions, which can take place in a mere 100 or so quadrillionths of a second.
