COSMOLOGY:
Cosmic Explosions in an Accelerating Universe

Measurements of the distance to supernova explosions are providing new insights into fundamental cosmological questions. Recent observations indicate that the universe's expansion is accelerating, contrary to previous assumptions. If confirmed, the results will revive the concept of the cosmological constant, that is, the action of some repulsive force on the largest scales of the universe, and imply that the universe will expand forever.
