With the human genome almost finished, leaders of the project are trying to decide where next to focus their energies. They're debating a plethora of options, from more sequencing to comparative genomics to proteomics. Some of these could break the bank, though, and none has the immediacy or finiteness of sequencing the human genome. And if the public loses interest, academic researchers fear that too much of the work will take place behind the closed doors of industry.
