Toward Resolving the Mystery of Galaxy Formation

Most visible matter in the universe is held in galaxies. Yet astronomers know little about how galaxies first formed and how they evolve. In his Perspective, Scodeggio explains how studies of very faint, very distant galaxies called EROs and, most recently, HEROs are providing some support for one of the two competing models of galaxy formation, the monolithic collapse scenario. But proving the case will challenge the capabilities of even the newest and largest telescopes.
