BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH:
Help Wanted: Departure of Top Officials Adds to Vacancies at NIH
Eliot Marshall
Steven Hyman, director of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), is leaving to become provost at Harvard
University in December. And Alan Leshner, director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), will become CEO of the
American Association for the Advancement of Science, the publisher of Science. The twin departures have added to concerns
among scientists about a growing leadership vacuum at the National Institutes of Health, which has been without a permanent director for 22 months and
now has vacancies at the heads of five institutes.
