JAM--Unknown to the West until the 1950s, the Minaret of Jam has miraculously survived earthquakes, Genghis Khan, and a flood this spring that nearly toppled the intricately decorated 12th century structure. Keeping it from collapsing, however, is no simple matter in a country plagued for 2 decades by poverty, war, and chaos.
