Light microscope image of the dorsal view of the mite Proctolaelaps regalis (x20). The red spot at the caudal end of each mite is pigment that is retained in the posterior hindgut before excretion. This pigment has its origin in the eye of Drosophila flies, on which the mite feeds. This mite is a potential vector for the horizontal transfer of genes between different species of Drosophila.
