About the Cover

Ventral view of an Artemia franciscana (brine shrimp) metanauplius larva stained with an antibody against the conserved region of the Distal-less protein. Distal-less, previously known to be required for proximodistal axis formation in developing insect limbs, has been found to be expressed in every branch of all developing arthropod limbs. The antibody recognizes Distal-less proteins from vertebrates as well as arthropods. See page 1363 and the related News story on page 1297. [Image: Grace Panganiban]
