Segmentation in the early embryonic hindbrain is revealed by Hox reporter gene expression in a transgenic mouse. The alternating blue- and brown-stained domains are rhombomeres, repeat units that underlie the hindbrain's segmented neural architecture. Development of the nervous system, from embryonic patterning to early function, is the focus of this issue.
